August 13, 2024, Peoria, IL- Today, Stevie A. Linwood, 43, was charged with First-Degree Murder and Attempt Murder for shooting and killing his girlfriend and then shooting a neighbor. The State filed a Petition to Detain Linwood, which will be heard by a judge tomorrow.

Just after 8 pm on Sunday, police responded to the 3400 block of N. El Vista in Peoria on a report of two people shot. When officers arrived, they found two women with gunshot wounds, one lying in the doorway of the home and the other in the front yard. The woman in the doorway was Linwood's girlfriend, Zaneta S. Winters, 35, who was pronounced brain dead on Monday afternoon after being shot in the back of the head. A witness told detectives the second victim, a neighbor, ran across the street to help when she was also shot. The witness saw the neighbor lying on the ground with Linwood standing over her shooting. Linwood then walked away. He was arrested nearby. The neighbor who was shot is still in the hospital in critical condition.

This investigation is ongoing, and more charges are expected when the case proceeds to the Grand Jury. If you have information regarding this incident, please contact the Peoria Police Department at 309-673-4521.
