The scrum that surrounded Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro after an Interstate 95 bridge collapsed in Philadelphia in June 2023 included print and TV reporters-and a dozen social media influencers.
Invited to the scene by Gavin Lichtenstein, SOC/MA '19, Shapiro's director of digital partnerships, content creators shared news of the 12-day reconstruction on TikTok and Instagram. Local comedian Alex Pearlman, who boasts 1.7 million followers, made a video of Shapiro holding a press conference as construction workers toiled nearby.
That prompted Lichtenstein to build bridges with more than 150 influencers who cover food, dating, makeup, and more-but typically avoid government or politics.
"Our goal was to make the content as authentic and real as possible to keep Pennsylvanians informed while creating spaces for creators to talk directly to the governor to reach new audiences online," he says.
Lichtenstein's path in the governor's office was an unconventional as his cadre of content creators. He entered high school with fourth-grade math and reading skills and credits his mother's advocacy and special education teachers' diligence with helping him to manage his educational challenges.
In high school, Lichtenstein joined multiple clubs and was elected class president. LaSalle University admitted him to an undergrad program for students with lackluster test scores but who stand out in other areas.
His journey is a strength, Lichtenstein says. During his job interview with two Shapiro officials, Lichtenstein talked about why he's a Democrat and the educational obstacles he's overcome.
"My story is personal, but it's not unique," he says. "I've been more fortunate than most, but with that I feel a responsibility to public service and the power of believing in one another."
