Gorgui Dieng Foundation Leads Agricultural Development Project in Senegal with Support from USADF & the NBPA Foundation

New York - September 26, 2024 - The Gorgui Dieng Foundation (GDF) is taking a significant step in improving agricultural practices and nutrition in rural Senegal, thanks to a $25,000 matching grant from both the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation and the United States African Development Foundation (USADF). The combined $50,000 in grant funding will be used to establish a hospital farm at the Kébémer Hospital in Senegal. This initiative will provide nutritious vegetables and medicinal plants for patients, their attendants, and the surrounding community.

The official grant signing ceremony took place on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the NBPA's headquarters in New York. This milestone represents a continued commitment by GDF to support the health and economic well-being of the people in Kébémer, a region dear to former NBA player and Kébémer native, Gorgui Dieng. His foundation focuses on finding sustainable solutions to the pressing challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Senegal.

The hospital farm is more than just a source of fresh food; it is part of a broader effort to transform agricultural practices in the region. Through the Gorgui Dieng Agriculture Training Center and the Chaya Project, the initiative will equip local farmers with education and resources to adopt sustainable farming methods. By improving nutrition and providing the tools for better agricultural productivity, the project aims to combat food insecurity while fostering long-term health and economic benefits for the community.

"I am grateful for this support from the NBPA Foundation and the United States African Development Foundation," said Gorgui Dieng. "By continuing our work at the Kébémer Hospital, we are taking important steps toward improving health, nutrition, and farming practices for the people in this community. Kébémer is close to my heart, and I'm excited to see the impact of this project."

Travis Adkins, President and CEO of USADF, praised the partnership and the broader impact of the project: "We are thrilled to celebrate another milestone in our ongoing partnership with the NBPA, this time supporting Gorgui's incredible work at the Kébémer Hospital. Food security is a core pillar of USADF's programming across Africa, and we look forward to the positive impact this initiative will have in enhancing nutrition and economic prosperity for the people of Kébémer."
