CUNY TV, the public educational television station of The City University of New York, received 23 nominations for the 2024 New York Emmy Awards across 10 shows, breaking the record for the most nominations received by CUNY TV in a single year.

The recognized shows included a new documentary series called "CUNY Laureates," which earned five nominations; "Nueva York," which earned four nominations; and "Asian American Life," which earned three. "LATiNAS" and "Shades of US" each earned two nominations, while the newly launched talk show hosted by CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, "Café con Felo," earned its first nomination. Classic CUNY TV shows "Urban U," "Black America," and "Let It Rip" were also recognized. CENTRO, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, also earned three nominations for its "Puerto Rican Voices" docuseries, which airs on CUNY TV.

This represents the first New York Emmy Award nominations for two shows that led CUNY TV's revamped programming lineuplaunched last year, which introduced additional University-centric storytelling to the 39-year-old station. "CUNY Laureates," which spotlights CUNY graduates who won major awards, earned one of its nominations for a segment featuring Hunter College graduate Ada Louise Huxtable, a MacArthur Fellow who became the first full-time architecture critic at The New York Times. "Café con Felo" earned a nomination for the Chancellor's interview with renowned theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, a longtime City College faculty member.

"Congratulations to CUNY TV on an incredible showing with nominations for the New York Emmy Awards," said CUNY Chancellor Matos Rodríguez. "Starting 'Café con Felo' on the station gave me a chance to share the meaningful conversations I have with leading New Yorkers who are friends of CUNY, and I learned a thing or two about physics from our very own Michio Kaku, one of my first guests. Never would I have thought that such an engaging conversation could earn me an Emmy nomination."

"We are incredibly proud of our very own CUNY TV for receiving a record-breaking 23 nominations for the coveted New York Emmy Awards this year, particularly those that remind the city of the talent that comes from CUNY," said CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing Maite Junco. "We congratulate the entire team at our University's television station on this remarkable accomplishment as CUNY TV continues to elevate stories that hold value to New Yorkers."

CUNY TV has now received a total of 194 New York Emmy Award nominations throughout its 39-year history. Of those, the station has won a total of 41 awards, including six earned last yearfor "Nueva York," "Puerto Rican Voices," and "I Am a Dreamer."

"We are honored and appreciative to have been recognized for television excellence by our peers in the industry, setting a new record of nominations for CUNY TV for this prestigious award," said CUNY TV Interim Executive Director Chiqui Cartagena. "As we celebrate, we remain dedicated to telling the stories of the many underrepresented communities we serve."

The nominations were announced last Friday. The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will present the honorees for the 67th annual New York Emmy Awards across three events in October: the New York Emmy Sports Award Ceremony on Oct. 8 at the Hard Rock Hotel New York, followed by the Creative Arts Ceremony and the New York Emmy Awards Gala, both on Oct. 26 at the New York Marriott Marquis.
