SAN DIEGO (DECEMBER 11, 2024) - Nicole DeWitt was announced as Interim Deputy Superintendent of San Diego Unified School District at tonight's Board of Education regular meeting.
"Nicole brings successful experience improving outcomes for historically underrepresented students, and she's been instrumental in driving significant gains with a particular focus on supporting the wellness needs of our students," said Interim Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula, who nominated DeWitt. "She is a qualified, dedicated and compassionate educator. Nicole has earned the respect of her peers, and over the last two decades has demonstrated the leadership qualities that will help us uphold our commitment to educational excellence."
DeWitt began her career in education in 2002, joining San Diego Unified in 2017 as a principal at Scripps Ranch High School. DeWitt has also been a teacher, an English Learner coordinator, and an executive director with the district. Most recently, she worked as Senior Executive Director, Thriving School Communities.
As a district administrator, DeWitt established partnerships with several local community organizations to provide onsite social-emotional and mental health services to students of all ages, regardless of income or insurance status.
Since its inception in 2022, over 8,000 students have been served districtwide through individual therapy and support groups, removing barriers to access and giving students the opportunity to meet with a mental health professional in a safe space on campus. She is particularly dedicated to addressing the academic and wellness needs of students and families through a continuum of care models that provide holistic services.
"I am deeply committed to our students and the mission of this district," said Interim Deputy Superintendent DeWitt. "I look forward to continuing the work and am grateful for the opportunity to partner with our students, families, and staff to create opportunities and expand possibilities."
As a result of DeWitt's promotion, Marissa Allan, the former Senior Director, Multilingual Education Department has now been named Interim Senior Executive Director, Thriving School Communities. Meanwhile, Director of Dual Language Schools Veronika Lopez-Mendez will be stepping into Allan's former role.
Additional appointments include Sandra McClure as principal of Ross Elementary School and the Board of Education approved Ami Shackelford as Senior Executive Director of Finance.
