Medina-Bolivar Selected for Induction into Arkansas Latino Hall of Fame

JONESBORO - Dr. Fabricio Medina-Bolivar, professor of plant metabolic engineering at Arkansas State University, is one of four individuals selected for induction into the inaugural Arkansas Latino Hall of Fame (ALHOF) on Thursday, Oct. 24.

The Arkansas Latino Hall of Fame's mission is to foster unity, honor cultural richness, and amplify the voices of those whose stories have woven the fabric of the state. The Arkansas Latino Hall of Fame and the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce work in partnership to present the annual awards ceremony to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Latinos who have significantly contributed to the cultural, economic and social tapestry of Arkansas.

"It is a profound honor to be included in the inaugural class of the Arkansas Latino Hall of Fame," responded Medina-Bolivar after he heard the announcement. "I am deeply humbled by this recognition, which reflects not just my efforts but the collective dedication of our vibrant Latino community here in Jonesboro. This community has been like a second family, offering unwavering support and encouragement. Together, we have worked tirelessly to promote educational initiatives and expand opportunities for Latinos.

Medina-Bolivar's scientific journey began with a BS in biology from Cayetano Heredia University in Peru, followed by a Ph.D. in plant physiology from Pennsylvania State University. He pursued postdoctoral research in molecular biology at Virginia Tech before joining the faculty of Arkansas State University in 2005.

In addition to his faculty responsibilities in the Department of Biological Sciences, he is director of both the environmental sciences and molecular biosciences graduate programs and conducts cutting-edge research in his laboratory at the Arkansas Biosciences Institute.

"This recognition is absolutely well deserved," said A-State Chancellor Todd Shields in a note to Medina-Bolivar. "I am so glad to know that your excellent work and dedication is being recognized."

Devoted to promoting leadership and higher education within the Hispanic community and other underrepresented groups, Medina-Bolivar serves as president of the A-State Latina/o Faculty and Staff Association and is a member of the executive committee for the Northeast Arkansas Hispanic Professional Network (NEAHPN).

"I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my colleagues and students at Arkansas State University and the Centro Hispano in Jonesboro. Their support has been invaluable," the award-winner added. "This award energizes me to continue advocating for equitable educational opportunities and to work even more diligently to strengthen our community. It underscores the significance of our collective efforts and the positive impact we can achieve together."

Medina-Bolivar has also served as president of NEAHPN and a board member for the Centro Hispano in Jonesboro. He co-advised the Hispanic-based mentoring student organization Hermana y Hermano and was named "Outstanding Hispanic Achiever of the Year" by the Centro Hispano in 2011.

His commitment to fostering an inclusive environment was recognized with A-State's 2024 Excellence in Community Diversity Award.
