Lane Closure Will Allow Crews to Perform Required Inspection and Routine Maintenance Work

Southbound South Grand Island Bridge to be Reduced to One Lane Beginning 8 P.M. on Saturday, September 14 Through 3 A.M. Monday, September 16

Significant Delays Expected During Scheduled Closure

Additional Closures Planned for Next Two Weekends

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced an extended lane closure on the southbound South Grand Island Bridge starting Saturday, September 14. The closure will allow crews to inspect the structure as required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) every two years. Routine maintenance on the bridge will also be performed.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, through 3 a.m. Monday, September 16, the right lane of the bridge will be closed to traffic.

Drivers should expect significant delays throughout the duration of the closure and may want to consider using the North Grand Island Bridges to get on and off Grand Island.

Additional lane closures on the northbound South Grand Island Bridge are scheduled for September 20, 27 and the 28-30. More information will be provided ahead of each closure.

Motorists are urged to be alert and follow the posted work zone speed limits. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.
To further enhance safety for workers in a work zone, Governor Hochul signed legislation establishing the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement pilot program. The safety enforcement program began in April 2023 and is in effect in various active construction zones on the Thruway. Work zones with speed camera enforcement will have clear signage leading up to it and motorists violating the posted speed limit within the work zone will be fined. More information on the program can be found here.
