Yellowknife - November 5, 2024
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) invites residents to participate in a public review of proposed changes to the 2020 National Model Codes. Led by the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC), this review offers a valuable opportunity for residents to provide input on building standards that directly impact safety and quality of life.
The review addresses topics within the National Building Code of Canada, the National Fire Code of Canada, the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, and the National Plumbing Code of Canada. Anyone interested in participating can visit the CBHCC website to access the proposed changes and submit feedback until December 19, 2024.
Comments will be reviewed by members of the relevant code development committees, who will use input to make informed recommendations. If approved, these updates will be incorporated into the 2025 editions of the National Model Codes and help shape the 2025 National Building Code and Fire Code.
The GNWT expects to adopt finalized 2025 editions of the National Building Code and National Fire Code within 18 months of their national approval. This timeline aligns with the GNWT's commitment to maintaining modern, effective codes that meet the evolving needs of NWT communities. Adopting these codes ensures safer, more resilient building standards that address current and future challenges in construction and fire safety.
Public participation is essential to ensure that these codes reflect the diverse needs of communities in the Northwest Territories and across Canada.
