WASHINGTON, D.C. - Joint Staff Spokesperson Navy Capt. Jereal Dorsey provided the following readout:

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., met with key leaders in the Philippines, including National Security Advisor Eduardo M. Año, Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro, Jr. and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Gen. Romeo Brawner, Jr., today in Manila, Philippines.

The leaders discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen the alliance, including bilateral security assistance, utilization of Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement agreed locations and the importance of maritime domain awareness to counter illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive activities. The leaders also shared their assessments of the regional security environment, including recent events in the vicinity of Second Thomas Shoal, and the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The U.S.-Philippines Alliance has upheld peace and security in the Indo-Pacific for over 70 years with a shared vision of transparency, the rule of law, respect for sovereignty and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
