UC San Diego Library Presents Art of Science 2024

A fusion of beauty and discovery takes center stage as the University of California San Diego Librarypresents Art of Science 2024, a vibrant exhibition showcasing the awe-inspiring visuals that emerge from UC San Diego's pioneering research via the Library's annual Art of Science contest.
Opening on Wednesday, October 16, at the Ida & Cecil Green Faculty Club at UC San Diego, the exhibition will feature seven winning entries from the 2024 Art of Science contest alongside select works from previous years. To enhance accessibility, the exhibition labels will be available in both English and Spanish, and a complementary digital exhibitwill remain online in perpetuity.
"Our Art of Science contest has quickly become a beloved tradition on campus and within the community," said Audrey Geisel University Librarian Erik Mitchell. "I'm delighted by its growing popularity, as it transforms groundbreaking research at UC San Diego into a format that is both visually stunning and accessible to all. The contest also underscores the importance of the Library's Research Data Curation services, which play a vital role in helping our scholars preserve and share their work effectively."
The Library will host an opening reception for Art of Science 2024on Wednesday, October 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will include brief presentations by select Art of Science honorees, who will share insights into their work and its broader impact. The reception is free and open to the public; however, advance registration is required.
Now in its fourth year, the Art of Science contestcelebrates the beauty that emerges from scientific research at UC San Diego and beyond. This year's contest invited students, researchers and affiliates to submit images or graphics that visually convey the essence of their work. Each submission also included an engaging and accessible caption that explained the research, ensuring non-scientists could appreciate the significance of the discoveries.

A distinguished panel of judges, including UC San Diego faculty, staff and prominent community members selected the 2024 Art of Science contest winners. This year's judges included:

- Erik T. Mitchell, Audrey Geisel University Librarian, UC San Diego Library
An open voting period allowed the campus and San Diego community to vote for their favorite image, resulting in the Open Voting Winner.

The Library's Research Data Collections repository hosts more than 80 terabytes of data from various scientific disciplines at UC San Diego, including archaeology, chemistry, climate science, structural engineering, ocean science and more. The repository's rich collection of images inspired the Library to create the Art of Science contest.
