Patriot Day ceremony and campus remembrance planned

The University of Delaware community will recognize the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in several ways on and off campus this year.

"This is always a somber day for those of us who vividly remember the horrible events of September 11, 2001, as well as the many acts of heroism and sacrifice by first responders and others," President Dennis Assanis said.

"I encourage all members of the UD community - including those who are too young to have first-hand knowledge of the day - to take the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of 9/11 and its ongoing impact on our lives," Assanis said.

"We can also recommit ourselves to the work of advancing the University's shared values and promoting peace and justice in the world through education and scholarship," he said.

UD and the City of Newark will host a Patriot Day remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Olan Thomas Park, 89 Papermill Rd., Newark. All are welcome to attend.

In addition, flags on the UD campuses will be flown at half-staff in memory of those who died in the attacks, and the UD Carillon will toll at four times - 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 10:03 a.m. - to mark each moment that one of the airplanes crashed.

The City of Newark also has organized a National Day of Service from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Olan Thomas Park. For additional information or to register, call (302) 366-7000 or email [email protected].
