Argentina unanimously elected as President of the Eleventh Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty

On August 23, Argentina - in the person of its Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Geneva - was elected as President of the Eleventh Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

The ATT is one of the most important international agreements on the subject since it is the only legally binding instrument that regulates the international trade in conventional weapons, from small arms and light weapons to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships among other categories set out in the Treaty.

The election of the Argentine representative by acclamation during the Tenth Conference of States Parties in Geneva coincides with the Tenth Anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty, which was strongly promoted by our country since its creation.

This is a clear recognition by the international community of Argentina's leadership in the fight against the illicit trade in conventional arms and their diversion, as well as in improving regulations in the international arms trade, promoting transparency and cooperation among States, to contribute to international peace and security.

This election also marks the milestone of being the first country in the history of the Treaty to hold the Presidency of one of its Conferences for the second time.

After the election, in his statement, Ambassador Foradori highlighted the strategic priorities of the Argentine Presidency: the universalization of the Treaty so that more States commit and join it; and a renewed momentum to enhance this instrument in a global context characterized by growing international conflicts.
