SMU's recognition stems from its significant contributions to various Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC) initiatives that aim to promote social inclusion, community engagement, and lifelong learning. Through these initiatives, SMU students and staff have enhanced the lives of individuals across Singapore, especially those from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds.

Here are some of the highlights of their inspiring work.

SMU has partnered Central Singapore CDC for various initiatives. One of these is the CDC Vouchers (CDCV) Scheme, which provides essential vouchers to low-income households to help them cope with the cost of living. SMU student volunteers played a crucial role in assisting residents with the redemption of the vouchers at community clubs.

Empowering Vulnerable Children through Education

SMU student volunteers also participated in the SkillsFuture Junior Stars Nurture, a programme that provides learning opportunities for vulnerable children and expose them to future-ready skills sets

Through Nurture, Central Singapore CDC (CS CDC) aims to complement the efforts of MOE schools and Self-Help Groups in developing the children's 21st Century Competencies, including building their confidence as communicators, developing their capacity for problem-solving and enhancing their motivation for self-directed learning. In 2024, SMU volunteers are supporting ten Nurture centres in the Central Singapore district.

SMU Disability Support Services proudly marked its sixth year of participation in The Purple Parade celebrations in 2023. This annual event underscores the university's unwavering commitment to promoting inclusivity and celebrating the abilities of individuals with disabilities.

In the lead-up to the contingent march, Executive Committee members of the SMU Purple student advocacy group organised a creative fringe activity where participants crafted purple inclusivity-themed bracelets. This activity not only fostered a sense of community but also served as a meaningful symbol of the university's dedication to inclusion.

The event saw a powerful display of unity and support as 50 SMU students, staff, and families, all adorned in a vibrant sea of purple, marched with enthusiasm. Their collective presence highlighted the strong sense of solidarity within the SMU community, joining the tremendously energetic crowd gathered to champion the same cause.
