Shelbourne Street has re-opened to all road users after a two-month closure for road safety improvements and necessary maintenance.
In early August, City crews began important maintenance at the intersection of Shelbourne Street and Haultain Street to replace end-of-life traffic signal poles, increase lighting and improve accessibility. To ensure the safety of roadworkers and comply with updated provincial WorkSafeBC regulations, Shelbourne Street was closed north of Bay Street to Hillside Avenue. The City took this opportunity to accomplish other works along the corridor, including the installation of bike lanes from Haultain Street to North Dairy Road, fresh road paint, pavement and sidewalk maintenance, tree trimming, sign installation, underground utility connections and maintenance, while also coordinating with other Capital Regional District and District of Saanich projects.
"Closing Shelbourne Street meant that we were able to accomplish significantly more work in a shorter time while keeping workers safe," said Ross Kenny, Assistant Director of Transportation. "We're very grateful to folks for their patience while we took necessary steps to make the road smoother and safer for everyone, and we ask all road users to continue respecting signs and crews while work continues."
Concrete curbs will be installed later this year to further protect the new bike lanes and improve the connection to protected bike lanes currently under construction in Saanich. This project closes a significant gap in a key north-south cycling route, giving people safer and more convenient options to travel between Victoria and Saanich. All of Shelbourne Street is identified in Victoria's Official Community Plan (OCP) as part of the All Ages and Abilities (AAA) Cycling Network, and larger-scale upgrades are planned for this corridor following underground utility work in the future.
As other roadwork continues across Victoria, residents can use tools like the City's Roadworks Map or traffic advisories on X to stay informed about major construction impacts and plan alternate routes.
