City to Conduct Storm Water Flood Protection Gates Exercise

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX-The Corpus Christi Public Works Department will test its storm water gates on the City's northside along the Salt Flats Levee on Wednesday, May 28.

The training exercise, which will take one day to complete and will not affect traffic, is designed to test the readiness of the storm gates and personnel designated to install the barriers during a weather event. The storm gates will be removed the same day.

The storm water gates are the front line of defense in protecting downtown Corpus Christi from flooding. Consequently, they are temporarily installed when a major tropical event, such as a tropical storm or hurricane, threatens the Coastal Bend.

The storm water gates are an essential part of the City's Downtown Flood Protection System, which consists of several elements, including (from east to west) the earthen Salt Flats Levee, the Port Authority Wharf, Promenade, Museum Floodwall, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Bulkhead, South Art Museum and Barge Dock and City Seawall, as well as two storm water pump stations located at Kinney Street and Power Street.
