Time to introduce more widespread public suncream dispensers – Senator Clifford-Lee

Fianna Fáil Senator, Lorraine Clifford-Lee, has called for the introduction of more widespread public suncream dispensers around communities across Ireland.

Senator Clifford-Lee said, "During the summer months we need to look after our skin especially when temperatures are beginning to rise, and our skin is exposed to the sun. Adults and children need protection whether it is when working outdoors, during sporting activities or participating in other outdoor activities."

Skin cancer is the most common form of disease in Ireland, with 13,000 people diagnosed with it every year.

Last year the HSE ran a pilot programme that introduced suncream dispensers to local tidy town committees and sports clubs for use, and the requests for dispensers far exceeded what was available.

Senator Clifford-Lee said this shows that people are quite keen on the idea and want to engage, something the government alongside the HSE should consider by ramping up supply.

"The encouragement from the public on this during the HSE's pilot programme shows how keen people are of the idea. It is a fantastic idea, and protecting our skin is something we all need to consider during the summer months. It is another tool in the arsenal for us to protect ourselves"

She continued, "A large number of people work outdoors throughout the summer months or take part in sporting activities, and by having these dispensers available to them will ensure they have the protection they need whilst going about their day."

Senator Clifford-Lee says although there was some issues raised throughout the pilot campaign, public engagement is crucial for it to be effective.

"Throughout the pilot programme there were a couple of issue that were raised by the public. That is why public engagement is critical on this, and I am sure that is something that will be considered heavily by the HSE and the government. Overall, I think this is a fantastic idea and campaign, and one that I would fully endorse. Public health is of the upmost priority."
