Fairtrade recognition for University

Glasgow Caledonian University has proudly achieved a two-star Fairtrade Award in the national Fairtrade Universities and Colleges scheme, an improvement from our previous one-star status. We are the only Scottish university to receive this two-star rating in the 2022-24 cohort.

The Fairtrade Award audit occurs biennially, with our Student Volunteer Auditors evaluating Fairtrade evidence for the Fairtrade Foundation. This includes evidence of Fairtrade in catering, procurement, hospitality, sustainability events, campaigns, and academic teaching. Participating in this audit process has been a valuable experience for our students.

Desmond Wussah, a Student Volunteer, said: "As a volunteer, I participated in auditing Fairtrade activities at Glasgow Caledonian University and the Students' Association. This experience has given me skills in auditing, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. I've learned about ethical sourcing, fair prices, and sustainable livelihoods."

Our commitment to Fairtrade began in 2012 when we were first accredited as a Fairtrade University. The University and Students' Association's joint Fairtrade Policy outlines our commitments, while our Fairtrade plan details objectives for the coming year and our annual Progress Report highlights our achievements.

Embedding Fairtrade in the University's operations allows staff and students to support ethical trade practices and environmental sustainability, raising awareness about conscious consumerism. Fairtrade products ensure producers in developing countries receive fair wages and work in safe conditions, contributing to poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

Paulo Cruz, Head of Operational Sustainability, said: "This recognition exemplifies the sustainability efforts across campus. Supporting and promoting Fairtrade by stocking Fairtrade products and embedding Fairtrade in engagement events and research aligns with the University's mission for the Common Good. This award is a joint effort of various Fairtrade stakeholders across departments."

Wilfred Obi, Student President of the Students' Association, said: "I am thrilled the University has achieved the two-star Fairtrade Award, reflecting our progress over the past years. As Ethics and Environment are under my remit, I am keen to work with the University to continue integrating Fairtrade into our purchasing decisions. We believe that adhering to Fairtrade principles ensures all university dealings meet ethical and environmental standards."
