Mexico reiterates its commitment to regional integration and international law at the OAS
  • At the plenary session of the 54th OAS General Assembly, the Mexican delegation reiterated that Mexico's participation in the organization and other multilateral forums would continue to be guided by its constitutional principles of foreign policy.

At the plenary session of the 54th OAS General Assembly and on behalf of Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Joel Hernández García reiterated Mexico's commitment to regional integration, which strengthens economies and societies and enables us to face common challenges together.

In his remarks, Undersecretary Hernández said that all integration is based on unwavering principles, such as strict observance of the international and inter-American legal framework, the need for the peaceful settlement of any disputes that arise between States and the obligation to avoid, at all costs, the use of force in a manner incompatible with the principles of the United Nations (UN) and the OAS. He further called for denouncing and demanding accountability from States in the region that fail to comply with these principles.

"Have no doubt that Mexico's participation in the OAS and other multilateral forums will continue to be guided by its constitutional principles of foreign policy: the peaceful settlement of disputes, non-intervention, self-determination of peoples, international development cooperation and respect for and the promotion of human rights," he said.

He reaffirmed Mexico's commitment to the four pillars of the OAS, and highlighted:

  • The work done by the Electoral Observation Mission during the June 2 elections in Mexico.
  • Strengthening the inter-American human rights system and protecting human rights.
  • The Mexican Model of Human Mobility that addresses the structural causes of migration, and strengthening regular pathways for mobility, instead of policies of containment or sanctions.
  • Gender equality as an indispensable component of fair and inclusive societies.
  • The need to urgently address the deplorable humanitarian, social and economic consequences of the illicit trafficking of firearms and ammunition.
