Mexico will continue to advance its approach to human mobility as a national priority through the programs of the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), which has played a key role in addressing the structural causes of migration in Central American countries, said Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente.
Chairing the 22nd session of the AMEXCID Advisory Council, Secretary de la Fuente said that through initiatives like Sembrando Vida (Sowing Life) and Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro (Youths Building the Future) in Central America, AMEXCID has had an impact on people's lives and community development, offering alternatives that reduce the likelihood of northward migration. This has significantly reduced migration from these areas.
The Foreign Secretary noted that international cooperation is an expression of Mexican humanism. The agency's work is not merely abouat specific tasks, but is inspired by an ethical framework rooted in this humanitarian philosophy.
"International cooperation is extremely useful in addressing the many demands of the global agenda. However, we must never lose sight of the fact that the agency's ultimate goal is to help promote individual and collective wellbeing," said Secretary de la Fuente.
He added that, amid the conflicts and circumstances that lead to confrontation, cooperation serves to balance and counterbalance relationships between countries.
The Foreign Secretary stated that as part of President Claudia Sheinbaum's initiatives, Mexico has strengthened its global leadership, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, where the agency has played a crucial role and earned recognition for its work.
"AMEXCID strengthens Mexico's feminist foreign policy, which is fundamental to all the efforts of the Foreign Ministry," he stated, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all actions have a gender perspective that contributes to women's empowerment and full protection of their rights.
He noted that challenges such as climate change, the increasing inequality between countries, and systematic barriers preventing people from meeting basic needs represent opportunities for AMEXCID to work on a new phase of coordination and inclusion that can showcase the human, social, and solidarity-driven side of international relations.
In her remarks, AMEXCID Executive Director Alejandra del Moral Vela referenced President Sheinbaum's instruction to focus international cooperation on efforts that help to eradicate hunger and poverty, with emphasis on children, adolescents, and youths.
Regarding human mobility, she stated that the agency's programs would help create shared prosperity, encourage ties to one's community and prevent forced migration.
"We face an enormously important challenge: to make the Sembrando Vida humanitarian model into a global program. Under instructions from the president and foreign secretary, we are looking for countries interested in joining trilateral partnerships under this initiative," she said.
