Assassination of the Head of Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran

The Brazilian government vehemently condemns the assassination of the Head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, which occurred today, July 31st, in Tehran.

Brazil repudiates the blatant disrespect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iran, in clear violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, and reaffirms that acts of violence, under any motivation, do not contribute to the pursuit of lasting stability and peace in the Middle East. Such acts further diminish the chances of a political solution to the conflict in Gaza, negatively impacting the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

Brazil reiterates its call to all actors to exercise maximum restraint to prevent the region from entering a conflict of significant proportions and unpredictable consequences, at the cost of innocent civilian lives. Additionally, it urges the international community to make every possible effort to promote dialogue and prevent the escalation of hostilities.

The Brazilian government emphasizes that to halt the serious escalation of tensions in the Middle East, it is essential to implement an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, in compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735.
