RTI’s Jamie Pina recognized as American Medical Informatics Association Fellow

Pina to be inducted for making significant and sustained contributions to the fields of public health and biomedical informatics

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, is pleased to announce that Jamie Pina, Ph.D., MSPH, FAMIA, senior director leading RTI's Center for Data Modernization Solutions, has been named to the 2025 class of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Fellows.

AMIA is the leading association for informatics professionals with more than 5,500 members from more than 65 countries. The AMIA helps assess the effect of health innovations on health policy and advance the field of informatics. Fellows apply informatics skills and knowledge within their professional setting, demonstrate professional achievement and leadership, and contribute to the betterment of AMIA.

"Being inducted as a Fellow of AMIA is an incredible honor, reflecting the dedication to public health data modernization, and biomedical informatics, that I'm fortunate to pursue at RTI International," said Dr. Pina. "I'm excited to continue advancing these fields through innovative, health-focused data solutions."

Currently, Pina leads several significant biomedical informatics efforts, serving as a Principal Investigator for BioData Catalyst-a cloud-based platform designed to facilitate data sharing, access and analysis across various biomedical research projects. He is also a Principal Investigator on the National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery(RECOVER) initiative, which aims to explore, prevent and treat long COVID through comprehensive research and data analysis. 

Pina's work emphasizes the practical application of biomedical informatics principles to address critical public health and biomedical challenges, utilizing advanced technology and conducting comprehensive evaluations of data systems.

"Jamie's contributions to public health data modernization and biomedical informatics are both innovative and impactful. He leads teams that solve pressing health challenges with robust technology," said David White, senior vice president, technology at RTI. "He has advanced RTI's mission and demonstrated his dedication to improving our national health data infrastructure. Jamie's induction as an AMIA Fellow is a well-deserved recognition of his expertise and commitment to the field."

In 2022, Pina was appointed to the Office of National Coordinator's (ONC's) Public Health Data Systems Task Force, establishing national data modernization guidelines for public health practice, which are now integrated into ASTP/ONC's HTI-2 rule. He is an Adjunct Professor at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health and a Board Member on the Health Informatics Advisory Board at George Mason University. 

A formal induction ceremony will be held at the AMIA 2025 Clinical Informatics ConferenceMay 20-22 in Anaheim, CA.
