- Robust Program for News Vets and Newbies Oct. 19 at SMU

TAB's Southwest Broadcast Newsroom Workshop is set for Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Umphrey Lee Center on the SMU Campus in Dallas, and while the program is designed primarily with professional journalists in mind there are three career-related sessions for station student interns, as well as college, university and high school students.

REGISTER/FULL AGENDA

Finding Your Mentors/Getting the Feedback You Need features TAB board members Raquel Amparo, KTVT-TV/KTXA-TV Dallas-Fort Worth, and Carolyn Mungo, WFAA-TV Dallas-Fort Worth, along with Chip Mahaney of E.W. Scripps, in a session exploring the practical steps to identifying mentors and industry coaches who can help student jobseekers and those new to the industry, to develop and grow in their careers.

Each of these veteran broadcasters started their careers in the newsroom and have migrated to managerial roles at stations and companies. Each has been helped in their journey by their mentors.

Three recent SMU graduates (2021-22) will discuss their transition from the classroom to their first and second jobs in a Texas broadcast newsroom in a session called My First Years Working in a Texas Newsroom.

Melia Masumoto, a reporter for Austin's KVUE-TV; Logan McElroy-Williams, a producer for WFAA-TV Dallas-Fort Worth; and Lauren Rangel, a reporter for Austin's KTBC-TV, will talk about job seeking and the lessons they learned in acclimating to the professional world in their first and second jobs in a broadcast newsroom.

A perennial favorite of student attendees at TAB's annual newsroom workshop is How NOT to Get a Job in Broadcast News.

The last session of the day brings together local broadcast Radio and TV news managers, and corporate newsroom recruiters, to offer their insightful advice on the don'ts AND the do's in seeking that first and second jobs in a Texas broadcast newsroom.

Mahaney will moderate the session featuring panelists Bruce Collins, WBAP-AM Dallas-Fort Worth; Meagan Harris, KTVT-TV Dallas-Fort Worth; Travis Ruiz, Nexstar Media Group, Dallas-Fort Worth; and Joe Terrell, KLTV-TV Tyler.

Plenty of Professional Sessions Too

Nationally known presenters Al Tompkins, Brendan Keefe and Deborah Potter will present multiple sessions throughout the day-long workshop, exploring AI's impact on the newsroom and newsgathering, best practices for interviewing, election night and political accountability coverage, as well as MMJ skills and tools.

Texas members of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) will present three investigatory panels focusing on open records request basics; utilizing data in spreadsheets for enterprise reporting; and telling those tough, non-visual stories that are data-based.

A separate legal session will focus on Texas and federal law impacting newsgathering and will feature attorneys Emily Carlton and Marc Fuller with TAB's general counsel law firm, Jackson Walker LLP.
