Brown Statement on Steward Health Closing Remaining Mahoning Valley Facilities

CLEVELAND, OH - U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) issued the below statement following the news that Steward Health will shutter Trumbull Regional Hospital, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, and local satellite facilities in 30-days.

"This announcement is a slap in the face to the hardworking health care workers who made this company millions of dollars and to the patients in the Mahoning Valley who relied on Steward's facilities for care. It's disgraceful that corporate greed has resulted in the loss of a hospital that's been serving this community for more than 100 years. My office is monitoring this situation closely and working to support affected workers and ensure patients continue to have access to high quality care," said Brown.

Recently, Brown raised the alarm in a letter to Steward's CEO about the impact of Steward's bankruptcy will have on the Mahoning Valley and demanded that the company put together a plan that ensures continuity of care for patients and economic certainty for workers and the community. Additionally, Brown called on Department of Labor (DOL) Acting Secretary Julie Su to support Steward workers and retirees as Steward Health Care undergoes bankruptcy proceedings. Brown also called on the Department of Justice's U.S. Trustee Program to appoint a Chapter 11 trustee to run Steward in place of the company's current management as quickly as possible, and to monitor the hospitals' bankruptcy proceedings to protect patients and local communities.
