Eastern announces fall 2024 'University Hour' events

Willimantic, CT (10/11/2024) - Eastern Connecticut State University will host six University Hour Events this fall semester. Held on Wednesdays at 3 p.m., the semester-long series of lectures and performances is free and open to the public.
On Oct. 16 in the Student Center Theatre, Doug Casey, executive director of the Connecticut Commission for Educational Technology, will present on the State of Connecticut's new Digital Equity Plan. The plan aims to ensure that all residents have equitable access to technology and can effectively utilize it for learning, career advancement, accessing state services, improving health and wellness and fully participating in society.
On Oct. 23 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC) Concert Hall, Professor Gabriel Salgado from Trinity College will present a lecture titled "Rethinking the Coloniality of Race in Latin America." Salgado will focus on the concept of "blood purity" policies in Spain before 1492 and how they impacted the development of race.
On Oct. 30 in the FAIC Foyer, artist Victor Pacheco will discuss his artistic practices as a member of the local Puerto Rican diasporic community. His work will be on display in the University's Art Gallery exhibition "Diasporican" from Oct. 15 to Feb. 14. "Diasporican" is a project of the National Puerto Rican Diaspora Museum.
On Nov. 6 in the Student Center Theatre, Bolivian writer Rodrigo Urquiola will discuss his literary works and and life story, delving into how he portrays the existence of deep social and economic divides in multi-ethnic societies and how literature is a powerful instrument for self-expression and social change.
On Nov. 13 in the Student Center Theatre, a representative from the Alzheimer's Association will explain the causes, preventative measures and misconceptions about the disease. This discussion hopes to bring people together in the fight against Alzheimer's.
On Dec. 4 in the FAIC concert hall, acclaimed jazz pianist Dave Frank will perform original material in an informal solo piano concert. Drawing on his experiences with Lennie Tristano, Frank creates riveting interpretations of standard and original repertoire. His performances often include a discussion of the art of jazz piano playing.
