Use Space Heaters Safely
Space heaters can be a serious fire hazard if not used properly. Whether you're using an electric or a fuel-burning space heater, following safety tips can help keep you and your family safe. Here's information from the Raleigh Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association.
Keep Heaters Away from Flammable Materials
Maintain a three-foot safety zone around space heaters. Keep furniture, blankets, curtains, and papers away from the heater to prevent fires.
Use Heaters with Auto Shut-off Features
Choose space heaters with an automatic shut-off feature that turns the heater off if it tips over, reducing the risk of a fire starting from a tipped-over heater.
Plug Directly into the Wall
Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip. Plugging it directly into a wall socket ensures the heater gets enough power and reduces the risk of overheating.
Turn Off Heaters When Leaving a Room or Sleeping
Always turn off space heaters when you leave a room or go to sleep to reduce the risk of a fire.
Inspect Heaters Before Use
Before using your space heater, inspect it for signs of damage. If the heater has frayed wires or is malfunctioning, do not use it.
Keep Children and Pets Away from Heaters
Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from space heaters to avoid burns and other injuries.
Ensure Proper Ventilation for Fuel-Burning Heaters
If you use a fuel-burning heater, make sure the room is well-ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation and use.
Provide Regular Maintenance
