Artificial intelligence expert to deliver Marburg Memorial Lecture on Nov. 14

Dr. David Autor from the MIT Department of Economics will deliver this year's Marburg Lecture on Nov. 14 at 3:30 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union's Monaghan Grand Ballroom. The event is free for all to attend; visitors can register at this link.

Autor's talk is entitled "Expertise, Artificial Intelligence and the Work of the Future." It will explore whether recent advances in AI enhance or reduce the value of human expertise. This question will be examined through the lens of three technological revolutions of the last two centuries: the Industrial Revolution, the Computer Revolution and the AI Revolution. Autor will also examine the labor market opportunities and risks that artificial intelligence poses.

Autor is the co-director of the NBER Labor Studies Program and the MIT Shaping the Future of Work Initiative. He has received numerous awards for both his scholarship-the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, the Sherwin Rosen Prize for outstanding contributions to the field of Labor Economics, the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship in 2019, the Society for Progress Medal in 2021-and for his teaching, including the MIT MacVicar Faculty Fellowship.

The lecture series is named in honor of the late Theodore F. Marburg, a long-time member of the economics department. The goal of the Marburg Memorial Lecture is to provide a forum for the discussion of moral, philosophical and social dimensions of economic issues, as well as continue Professor Marburg's commitment to the economic aspects of peace and justice.
