NO STICKER YARD WASTE WEEKS

Our city offers free yard waste weeks to solid waste customers to defray the cost of yard waste disposal during the spring and fall lawn cleanup seasons. The free, or "No Sticker," weeks are offered for two (2) weeks in the spring and six (6) weeks in the fall from October 28-December 6, 2024. Yard waste must still be placed for collection at your pickup point on your normal pickup date in a Kraft two-ply bag or bundled properly.

RECREATIONAL FIRES & OPEN BURNING

As the wear cools down, it's also the time of year to enjoy fire pits and outdoor fireplaces. The Bettendorf Fire Department wants to encourage you to do all you can to burn cleanly, safely, and responsibly for your family, neighbors, and community.

If you choose to burn wood, reduce particle pollution with these steps:

  • Only burn seasoned, dry wood. It burns hotter and cleaner.
  • Use a moisture meter to check firewood. Moisture content is best at about 20%.
  • Cover stacked wood, but allow good airflow so it can dry.
  • Never burn wood during air quality alert days when air pollution is already higher.
  • Never burn green wood, construction waste, plastic, garbage, or yard waste. They create more smoke and can be toxic.
  • Take extra care if you live in a region where brush fires are of concern.

If you are looking for a cleaner alternative, consider switching to natural gas or propane to reduce harmful air pollutants.

IMPORTANT: Our City complies with all burn bans issued by Scott County or the State of Iowa. You are not allowed to burn leaves, trees, tree trimmings, grass, rubbish, residential waste, or garbage in our city unless you have a permit.

HOLIDAY INFORMATION

There are three holidays our City will observe in Fall 2024: Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving on November 28, and the day after Thanksgiving on November 29. This means City Hall will be closed and collection services may be impacted. When we have those holiday schedules, we will post them here.

FALL FUN

There are many events taking place across our City over the next couple of months, but here are some features:

October 2 - Iowa Healthiest State Annual Walk
Every year on one day, thousands of people across the State of Iowa go outside and take a walk for 30 minutes to promote a statewide initiative that's all about being active and connecting with your community. On Wednesday, October 2 from 4pm-6pm,you can join this effort by heading to Kiwanis Park, 4223 Greenbrier Drive, where the Bettendorf Parks & Recreation Department is hosting an event for the Healthiest State 14th Annual Walk, part of the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative.

October 20 - Scarecrow Shenanigans
Scarecrow Shenanigans is back at the Family Museum! Sponsored by The Family Credit Union, this event will feature art (paint a mini pumpkin!), science (dissect an owl pellet!), and all the fun you expect at the Family Museum - balloon twisting, a fall photo op area, plenty of decorations, and a special performance by the Family Museum Dance Company. Tickets will go on sale October 1. This cost of the event is regular admission (free for Family Museum Members, $10 for Non-Members), but you must have a ticket purchased prior to Sunday, October 20.

October 25 - City Hall-o-ween
This is a free opportunity for children up to 5 years old to test out their costumes and go trick-or-treating in a safe, welcoming, and warm environment. Bettendorf City Hall will be decorated and City Staff - including the Bettendorf Police and Fire Departments - will be handing out treats!

October 26 - Halloween Parade
This is a great way to get a kickstart filling up your candy bags - without having to move!
NEW ROUTE: Due to the construction of The Landing, this year's parade route is changing. The parade will begin at 18th Street from Bettendorf Middle School's North Parking Lot. The procession will travel up 18th Street, turn right at Spruce Hills Drive, turn right on Middle Road, and finish in Bettendorf Middle School's South Parking Lot (see route here).

October 31 - Citywide Trick-or-Treating
