In a pivotal development for downtown Portland, Mayor Ted Wheeler joined partners to announce the location of the new James Beard Public Market. Situated in the historic Selling Building at Southwest 6th Avenue and Alder Street, this transformative project, championed by Mayor Wheeler, is poised to become a vibrant hub for economic growth, local entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange, aligning with Portland's vision for a revitalized central city. With a name that honors Portland native James Beard, a culinary icon, the market will serve as a daily, year-round destination showcasing the region's bounty and fostering opportunities for small, locally owned businesses.
Mayor Wheeler underscored the market's importance to Portland's future, stating, "This project is not just a market; it is a major step forward in our ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the central city, stimulate job creation, and support our local entrepreneurs. The James Beard Public Market will become a cornerstone for the growth of small businesses, offering new opportunities particularly for low- and moderate-income individuals and minority-owned businesses. The James Beard Public Market will be a transformative economic development project for Portland, creating lasting impact for generations to come."
Set in a high-traffic location near Pioneer Courthouse Square-affectionately known as "Portland's living room"-the market is expected to draw over 15 million annual visitors, creating a natural synergy with Portland's cultural landmarks and supporting the city's hospitality industry. The market will be surrounded by ample parking and more than 4,000 hotel beds, enhancing its accessibility for both locals and tourists.
With backing from partners like the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation, the Schlesinger Family, Prosper Portland, Travel Portland, and Travel Oregon, the James Beard Public Market will provide space for around 40 small businesses, including a teaching kitchen, restaurant, fish market, bakery, and a rooftop event venue. These spaces will generate hundreds of jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities, creating a ripple effect that will boost economic activity across the broader downtown area.
Mayor Wheeler is proud to support the James Beard Public Market as a symbol of the city's growth, resilience, and commitment to fostering an equitable, thriving community. This development is part of Mayor Wheeler's broader economic revitalization efforts, positioning Portland as a world-class culinary and cultural destination.
