LG&E and KU supporting students heading back to school

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) - What started by an employee more than 20 years ago has become Louisville Gas and Electric Company's annual event embraced by employee volunteers each summer to help students prepare for the upcoming school year.

During LG&E's 23rd annual Operation School Drive, employee volunteers assembled on July 25 about 2,000 school supply kits for area students. The supplies, which include notebooks, folders, pens, pencils and other items, will be distributed by community service organizations including Feed the City and Southwest Community Ministries and various school resource centers in and around Jefferson County.

LG&E and Kentucky Utilities Company have long supported organizations and initiatives that empower education and today's students. Operation School Drive is among the events taking place this week during the back-to-school season.

KU and the LG&E and KU Foundation are proud to support on July 27 the Back to School Rallies hosted by the YMCA of Central Kentucky where 4,000 backpacks will be distributed from various locations to area students and the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning's "Back 2 School Bash" in Lexington.

Since 2018, the utilities and the LG&E and KU Foundation have awarded nearly $3.5 million in support to nonprofit organizations and community initiatives centered on education, ranging from early childhood to higher education, and the areas of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math.)
