City of Annapolis Continues to Monitor Impacts from Tropical Storm Debby

The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents and businesses to report storm damage on the City's damage assessment survey Annapolis, MD (August 9, 2024) - The City of Annapolis continues to monitor the impacts of Tropical Storm Debby on Annapolis. The City has experienced heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding.

CURRENT CONDITIONS: As of 1 p.m., the City of Annapolis had received 1.26 inches of rain. Winds were sustained at 28 mph with wind gusts of 45 mph. While the heaviest rain has passed, scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening. Approximately 15 customers in Annapolis are without power.

Coastal flooding at City Dock reached 4.54 ft MLLW this morning making this flooding event one of the ten highest in the city's history. Dock and Compromise Streets are currently closed due to flooding and will remain so for several hours.

The City is coordinating and responding to calls on flooding, downed trees and potential power outages.

The Annapolis Department of Planning and Zoning is preparing to deploy damage assessment teams, and the Department of Public Works has mobilized "cut and toss" teams for debris removal with the Department of Recreation and Parks providing support.

Cross-departmental collaboration for cleanup is being coordinated by the Annapolis Office of Emergency Management (OEM). The Bay Bridge is experiencing delays and has been under wind restrictions for much of the day. Call 1-877-BAYSPAN (229-7726) for the latest information.

WEATHER FORECAST: The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning in effect until 4 a.m Saturday. The National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center (WPC) reports that the center of Post-Tropical Cyclone Debby is located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with sustained winds maxing 35 MPH.

The next high tide will be around 9:53 PM tonight night with maximum water levels between 3.5 and 4.0 ft MLLW.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS:

Public Survey: The City of Annapolis created a voluntary self-reporting damage assessment tool for residents and business owners impacted by Tropical Storm Debby.

This survey will help collect information on any additional damages or damages that may have gone unreported.

Damage Assessment: A Damage Assessment Team from the Department of Planning and Zoning will visit establishments affected by flooding Saturday, August 10, beginning around 8 a.m.

TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN: Please follow Annapolis Police directives and turn around at road closures. Do not drive through standing water. As a reminder, it only takes a few inches of water to turn a car into a boat (one without a motor or steering). Take the advice that the National Weather Service offers: "Turn Around. Don't Drown!"
