NOPD Launches Newest Class of Recruits

The NOPD today (August 26, 2024) launched Recruit Class 203 during an event held at the department's Training and Education Academy.

The 26-member class features 9 members from New Orleans and 18 in total from Louisiana, along with representatives from states including Alabama, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas. Three members have military service experience, while some are also are multilingual in speaking Spanish and Vietnamese.

"Your varied backgrounds and experiences will be a tremendous assed to this department and the communities we serve as New Orleans is a cultural gumbo," Deputy Superintendent Lawrence Dupree told the recruits. "You've chosen to enter law enforcement at a critical time not only for our city but for the nation. The world is watching, and you are stepping into a role that requires not just courage and strength, but also empathy and understanding."

John Thomas, director of public safety and homeland security for the City of New Orleans, told the recruits that they are joining the NOPD at an exciting time, as the department's crime reduction efforts are being recognized locally and nationally. He cited recent statistics that show New Orleans saw one of the largest declines in violent crime nationwide from 2022-2023.

"Each of you will play a role in keeping us on this trajectory and ensuring that every resident and visitor feels safe," Thomas said.

New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation President/CEO Melanie Talia also welcomed the recruits, ensuring them that NOPJF would be there to support them in their journey, as it does each member of the department.

Class 203 is the third class to begin academy training to date in 2024. So far this year, the department has graduated 35 recruits from academy training.

The recruits will undergo 26 weeks of instruction and training to learn not only how to serve and protect as police officers, but also how to be a part of the community. They will also work with the department to assist during upcoming major events including Super Bowl LIX and Mardi Gras.

"The academy ahead will be challenging, and that is by design," Dupree said. "We need you to be prepared for the reality of what it means to protect and serve the citizens of New Orleans. The training will push you, shape you, and give you the tools and skills necessary to do your job effectively.

"Stay focused. Stay committed. Give your best every single day and remember why you started this journey," Dupree added. "The City of New Orleans is counting on you, and we believe in your potential to make a difference."
