Statement From CPOC Relating to the Suspension of Commissioner Thomas

Philadelphia - Commissioner Rosaura Torres Thomas has been suspended from her position as a Commissioner on the Citizens Police Oversight Commission. This decision was made after careful consideration and deliberation, and it was determined that this action was in the best interest of the Commission and the community we serve.

City Council recently amended the CPOC legislation and Mayor Parker signed the amendments into law. These amendments allow the CPOC Board to suspend and remove a Commissioner who engages in misconduct, subject to Council's veto. A commissioner may be suspended for up to 90 days. If cause is found to remove the commissioner, they may be removed after a public hearing.

The Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that our police oversight process remains fair, impartial, and effective. We are dedicated to continuing our work in fostering a safe and just community for all citizens.

During this suspension, Commissioner Thomas will not be voting as a member of the Commission, speaking for the Commission, or attending events in any official capacity. We will update the community about developments regarding permanent removal or reinstatement of Commissioner Thomas at a later date.
