UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Idriss Yaya in Chad

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Idriss Yaya in the village of Djondjol, near the city of Mangalmé in central Chad on 1 March.

I condemn the killing of journalist Idriss Yaya. I call on authorities to urgently bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice. Journalists play a vital role in informing local populations and must be protected from all forms of violence.

Idriss Yaya worked as a journalist for Radio Communautaire de Mongo. He was reportedly attacked in his home by a group people, killing him together with his family. Prior to his killing, he had reportedly received several threats believed to be linked to his reporting.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
