Tracking Sleep Deficiency among Students

Name and Constituency of Member of Parliament

Mr Patrick Tay Teck Guan, Pioneer

Question

To ask the Minister for Education (a) whether the Ministry has any data on students' self-reported sleep patterns; and (b) if not, whether there are any plans to track sleep deficiency among students, in view that sufficient sleep is critical to physical and mental health and well-being.

Response

1.The Ministry of Education monitors the sleep sufficiency of students through regular surveys. Based on the latest survey in 2023, P5 and S3 students reported on average, getting 7 hours of sleep on school days. In schools, students learn about the importance of sleep and good sleep habits through the Physical Education curriculum. Parents also play an important role to encourage their children to adopt good sleep habits.
