The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) wishes its resilient Affiliate, the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU), a successful 6th National Congress.
Held under the theme, "Reclaim, Renew and Unite the Working Class. Back to Basics," the National Congress is set to run from 13 to 15 December.
SATAWU is one of COSATU's private sector unions and has members across the transport, security and cleaning sectors. It organises workers at economically strategic entities such as Transnet and Prasa and is well-placed to hold the management of these organisations to account as they implement reforms that will contribute towards stimulating and ultimately growing the economy. Road freight and logistics is another strategic sector that SATAWU has a significant presence in.
Workers in the security and cleaning sectors are amongst the most vulnerable. Employers in these sectors constitute the bulk of the list released by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, of companies that have been defaulting on pension fund payments for their employees.
COSATU trusts that its militant Affiliate will emerge from this National Congress energised and ready to tackle the myriad challenges facing its members and sectors it organises including the violence visited on long haul passenger buses.
The Federation wishes SATAWU a progressive 6th National Congress and is certain that the deliberations and resolutions taken will chart the path to a bright future for both the union and the workers it represents.
