This summer, Victoria's Artist in Residence Kemi Craig is collecting gestures from the community that she will incorporate into a free, public dance performance exploring how we bring our internal worlds to our external experiences.

Kemi invites you to share a gesture or common movement from your life that is part of how you strive towards safety, perfection, adaptation, fitting in or making yourself or others more comfortable.

Think about common movements that may be so intrinsic you don't think before you do them. This could be: facing the door in an elevator, moving to the right to make room for someone coming from the opposite direction, lifting your umbrella up so it doesn't bump another umbrella or covering your mouth when you smile.

Please submit a brief description of the movement or gesture to [email protected] before August 15.

Pop-Up Family Dance
Ship Point
Tuesday, August 13
4 to 6 p.m.

Come enjoy a free, fun-filled afternoon of music, dancing and laughter. Kemi Craig will share a social dance that she enjoyed with family while growing up. The dance will centre around the youngest members of the family first and use music to engage various age groups so that the afternoon moves from preschool and on up through the generations. This event promises to be a blast for the whole family. Please drop by. Registration not required.

Indigo In the Darkroom #2
Wark Street Garden
Friday, August 16
4 to 6 p.m.

Kemi Craig is hosting a second experimental workshop about developing film with indigo and other plant-based materials. Kemi is a woman of African descent who grew up in South Carolina where indigo is of historical significance for Black cultures. As an artist working in analogue film, which has also deeply affected ideas of Blackness across cultural spectrums, Kemi is interested in exploring relationships between image making and indigo and other plants from her cultural memory. All materials will be supplied. No experience with dark room processes is needed for this free event. Space is limited. Please RSVP.
