Weekly Roundup: Michigan Dems Call Out MAGA Republicans’ Lies at RNC

While MAGA extremists spent the week in Milwaukee, Michigan Dems were reminding voters of the truth amid RNC misinformation

LANSING - This week, Michigan Dems were out front, calling out the chaos that MAGA Republicans hurled our way from the RNC in Milwaukee. Whether it was attacking Governor Whitmer or claiming that they'll win our state by a "landslide," we were sure to correct the record.

While MAGA Republicans and Donald Trump this week continued to push their disastrous agenda for the country, Michigan Dems were reminding voters of the reality of Trump's first term and the dangers of a second. With help from a two-million-dollar infusion from the DNC, Michigan Dems will be fighting back and staying focused on delivering for Michiganders - we really can do it all.

Check out the greatest hits from this week below:

First, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes highlighted the threat that J.D. Vance poses as Trump's running mate. Vance has openly supported full abortion bans with no exceptions and demonized programs like Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act that millions of Michiganders rely on.

Despite only being in his first term in the Senate, Vance has still made a name for himself as full-on MAGA legislator in lockstep with the Project 2025 agenda on the Hill. Trump choosing Vance only underscores exactly how important it is that we reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris this November:

Gongwer: GOP Happy With Vance As Trump's VP Pick; Dems Say He's Extreme

  • Michigan Republicans praised U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance's conservative credentials following former President Donald Trump tapping him as his vice presidential pick, while Democrats criticized him as a far-right extremist…
  • "Trump has only ever surrounded himself with extremists who agree with his far-right agenda, and J.D. Vance is certainly no different," Barnes said in a statement. "As the junior senator from Ohio, Vance has shown that he doesn't care about anything other than pushing rhetoric and policies to take full control of our bodies, economy, and democracy. At the end of the day, Trump choosing Vance as his running mate underscores how important it is that we reelect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris."

Detroit Free Press: Michigan politicians react to Ohio Senator J.D. Vance becoming Trump's vice president pick

  • "Trump has only ever surrounded himself with extremists who agree with his far-right agenda, and J.D. Vance is certainly no different," said Michigan Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes.
  • "As the junior senator from Ohio, Vance has shown that he doesn't care about anything other than pushing rhetoric and policies to take full control of our bodies, economy and democracy. At the end of the day, Trump choosing Vance as his running mate underscores how important it is that we reelect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris."

In between extremist speakers, MAGA Republicans thought they would be able to attack our fearless Governor Whitmer without repercussions - not on our watch. Between defending our democracy, our reproductive freedom, our economy, and so much more, Governor Whitmer has faithfully served Michiganders day in and day out, and no one besmirches that good name without us having something to say about it:

Detroit News: Michigan Republicans use convention vote to criticize Gov. Whitmer

  • The Michigan GOP's delegation at the Republication National Convention used the spotlight during Monday's roll call vote on the party's presidential nomination to target Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer…
  • Asked about the remarks at the Republican convention, Lavora Barnes, chairwoman of the Michigan Democratic Party, said she was "surprised the MIGOP put out their dumpster fire for long enough to get their delegates to Milwaukee."
  • "Gov. Whitmer has made Michigan into a model of democracy for the country and created the best economy in the Midwest," Barnes said. "Not to mention, she beat the MIGOP's sloppy candidates not once but twice by 10+ points. The MIGOP apparently even thinks that someone from Ohio should be vice president, no wonder they keep losing. …"

Then, Chair Barnes proved exactly how ridiculous Trump's most recent attempts to disenfranchise Michigan voters really are as his campaign sues Governor Whitmer and Secretary Benson. This is not his first, and certainly not his last, attack on our democracy, but Michigan Dems will continue to stay laser-focused on ensuring all Michiganders can access the ballot box:

WILX: Trump campaign, RNC sue Gov. Whitmer over voter registration sites

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer and other officials are being sued by former President Donald Trump's campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) on Monday…
  • "It's unfortunately no surprise that Trump and the MAGA Republican Party are once again attacking our elections and planting distrust in our democratic systems - but this time, they are trying to make it harder for veterans and small business owners to register to vote," said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. "Governor Whitmer and Secretary Benson are all too familiar with being attacked by Trump and his MAGA cronies, but thankfully, they continue to work tirelessly to make our democracy more inclusive and more secure. In the face of this ongoing extremism, Michigan Democrats are standing strong against Trump and his allies' attempts to chip away at the foundation of our democracy."

Finally, Tommy Kubitschek, a spokesman for Michigan Dems, hit back at failed presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy's claims that Trump would win Michigan in a landslide - we will be holding these extremists accountable every chance we get:

Detroit News: Trump ally labels Michigan 'crucial,' predicts win by 'a large margin'

  • Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and ally of GOP nominee Donald Trump, told Republican delegates Wednesday morning that Michigan is "crucial" but he believes Trump is going to win the battleground state "by a large margin…"
  • Asked about Ramaswamy's "landslide" prediction, Tommy Kubitschek, spokesman for the Michigan Democratic Party, fired back: "Just like his landslide victory in the Republican primary? They can keep telling themselves that."

Here at home, a MAGA battle royale is in full swing as MAGA Matt Hall campaigns to keep his seat in his primary by proving how far-right he can go. Instead of focusing on trying to win back the majority in the state House, MAGA Matt is spending his time and money trying to outdo his opponents on extremist policies that his constituents clearly don't support:

MIRS: Anti Hall Ads Surface; He Responds With Gun Rights Message

  • Timmer said that in order to establish his Make America Great Again (MAGA) credentials in the primary, "he may find himself out on a limb when he tries to be someone who uses a fork and behaves politely in November."
  • The Michigan Democratic State Central Committee has put $3,876 into a digital ad spent in HD-42. Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Chair Lavora BARNES said, "Minority Leader Matt Hall is in a fight for political life to win the MAGA mantle instead of putting his energy into issues that matter most to his constituents. The more time and energy Matt Hall spends in this MAGA battle-royal, the more his constituents are not receiving the attention they deserve on the issues they find most important."

Take a look below at what some other Michigan Democrats had to say this week:
