What's the process for shipping to Puerto Rico?

Follow these steps for a successful shipment:

1. Choose a logistics provider

FTL moves are also transloaded into intermodal containers, with 53 and 28-foot containers used.

3. Prep your freight

Make sure to properly pack your load to withstand the different movements along the way to its final destination. You will want to use sturdy packaging and clearly label your goods with their' destination address and any contact information.

4. Remember documentation

While products coming from the mainland U.S. won't have to go through customs, there are specific documents needed, including a standard bill of lading, a commercial invoice, and an Electronic Export Information (EEI) filing (if the declared value of the shipment exceeds $2,500).

The commercial invoice should include a description and value of the goods, the consignee's name, address and phone number, and the tax bond number or tax-exempt identification, if available.

If an EEI is required, most carriers can file it for you for a small fee. You can also file on your own through the U.S. Census Bureau Automated Export System (AES). The EEI needs to include the Schedule B number for your freight (available through the U.S. Census Bureau website), shipment description, weight and dimensions, declared value, shipper and consignee name, address and phone number, tax ID (EIN number) or tax-exempt confirmation, shipment license information, and Export Classification Control Number (if needed).

5. Arrange pickup and delivery

Be sure your transportation partner has the correct address for pickup and final delivery. Remember that someone should be available at the destination to inspect and receive your load upon arrival.

6. Track the shipment

Utilize tracking tools to stay updated on your shipment and keep in contact with your broker to avoid mishaps or miscommunications.
