Skylark Field Airport to host groundbreaking for new terminal building

KILLEEN, Texas (October 16, 2024) - The City of Killeen's Aviation department will host a groundbreaking at Skylark Field Airport on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 2p.m.

The new, 3,000 square foot terminal will feature state-of-the-art amenities designed to improve the customer experience, including a break room with a microwave, vending machines, a complimentary coffee bar, conference room, charging stations, solar panels, a pilot's lounge equipped with recliners, couches and digital televisions, and more.

This project is part of Skylark Field's broader initiative to support aviation activities and economic growth in the region. The airport currently facilitates around 1,500 aircraft operations a month and houses 64 based aircraft. Skylark Field also supports 48 hangars and is home to five businesses, employing more than 26 individuals. The businesses include the Central Texas College Flight School, which has issued more than 50 pilot certificates in the last two years, and Freedom Air, which provides helicopter tours.

In addition to the terminal project, Skylark Field continues to undergo significant airfield improvements. This year, a $600,000 apron/tarmac and parking improvement project began, followed by a $5.5 million taxiway rehabilitation project in 2025, funded through grants from the Texas Department of Transportation.

"We are proud to see this next step in Skylark Field's evolution," Michael Wilson, Executive Director of Aviation, said. "The new terminal is designed with cutting edge amenities that will elevate the experience for our pilots, businesses and visitors. With these upgrades, we're ensuring that Skylark Field remains a key driver for both Killeen's economy and its aviation community."
