Lee County woman charged with two felonies and one misdemeanor

North CarolinaInsurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Miyah Shonae Williams, 24, of 2620 Brick Capitol Court, Sanford, NC. Williams was charged with identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies. She was also charged with false statements in applications for insurance, a misdemeanor.

According to special agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division, Williams acquired the identity of a deceased person, and used it to obtain an auto insurance policy premium difference in the amount of $1,066.10 from Integon Indemnity Corporation.

According to the arrest warrants, the offenses occurred on Feb. 27.

Williams was arrested on July 14, fingerprinted and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. She was expected to appear in Lee County Court on July 15.

"Consumers need to be extra vigilant to protect sensitive information from getting into the hands of the wrong person," Commissioner Causey said. "The department is committed to helping protect consumers by pursuing and prosecuting these types of crimes in North Carolina."
