There are a couple of ironclad rules in politics:

1. When your opponent is self-destructing, don't interrupt them. And 2. When you're in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging. Trump seems to have finally learned the former, while Harris and her campaign have definitely not learned the latter.

Biden and Harris' tragic incompetence was to blame for the botched pullout from Afghanistan that not only cost the lives of 13 of our military members to a suicide bomber, but also countless Afghan civilian allies who were killed in the same blast, or who fell from planes desperately trying to escape or who were hunted down by the Taliban because this White House failed to expedite their emergency applications for refugee status.

For three years, Biden and Harris have ignored those 13 fallen heroes, never even mentioning their names in public. So when they invited a President who did show concern and compassion for them - Trump - to a third anniversary commemorative ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, he showed up and spent four hours with them.

The wisest thing for Harris to do would have been to keep quiet and hope that nobody reminded anyone of her Administration's tragic debacle, but no: Her campaign had to politicize it by accusing Trump of politicizing it. Not only did this shine a spotlight on her culpability for this mass tragedy, it also set off a cascade of pathetic fake news and phony accusations to try to cover for her.

An NBC reporter claimed that Kamala had met with the families. She hadn't, and the network had to retract that…

As I previously reported, the families also defended Trump, saying that they invited him and requested cameras and video be there to record the ceremony for them. The White House claimed that Biden and Harris weren't invited to the ceremony. There's some question as to whether that's true, but if they weren't invited, who could blame the families? Did they really need Joe there, looking at his watch? (See what this is reminding everyone of?)

As for the Harris campaign's huffing that Arlington Cemetery is sacred ground that's never the site of politicians making videos, here's a still from the "Celebrating America" special taped for the Biden-Harris Inauguration at Arlington Cemetery, co-produced by the same person who produced the Democratic Convention:

All this so infuriated the Gold Star families that a number of the parents of the fallen soldiers released videos absolutely ripping Harris and Biden to shreds for their callous disregard for the military members and their families, their blatant politicization of their memorial and their abject incompetence that cost their children's lives. Warning, there's some rough, but well-deserved, language here. "Heinous, vile and disgusting" are among the nicer terms.

That same incompetence is still in evidence in the way Harris is handling this situation. If she'd just kept quiet, the media might have been able to bury it for her. But no, she had to open her mouth and stick her foot in it, and now she's reminded everyone of the tragic debacle they were trying so hard to make Americans forget.

Keep digging, Kamala. You'll need a big hole to bury your presidential aspirations in.

PS - As always, the Babylon Bee nails it with one headline:
