Tegucigalpa, December 2, 2024.- The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) is celebrating one year under the leadership of its Executive President, Gisela Sánchez, the first woman to hold this position in the institution's history. Since December 2023, her management has been marked by her vast experience in innovation, sustainability and finance.
Among the milestones achieved were the approval of 14 operations for more than $2.8 billion, including the sustainable recovery of Lake Yojoa in Honduras, the first operation under the European Union's Global Gateway initiative; and the largest operation in the Bank's history, for $770 million for the San José-San Ramón Road Corridor in Costa Rica. Other emblematic projects include innovations in education in Guatemala, the development of Surf City in El Salvador, potable water in Nicaragua, food security in Argentina, energy transition in Panama, and the integral development of the port of Haina in the Dominican Republic.
In the financial area, CABEI achieved historic milestones such as its fourth benchmark issue for $1.35 billion, the world's first Maternal Health Bond, its first Indonesian rupiah bond and a 30-year issue, the longest in its history. These achievements, together with the approval of a new Capitalization Policy and Financial Strategy 2025-2029, reflect the institution's rigorous and prudent approach to balance sheet management.
During these months the Bank sustained a very important institutional strengthening and has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability; in a short time it implemented a reform plan with 80% progress, approved by its Board of Governors and developed a new Institutional Strategy and adopted an Operational Plan 2025 that includes a budget reduction of more than 10% with respect to the previous year. In sustainability, the Bank offset 100% of the CO2 emissions generated in 2023 and made progress in the creation of a regional carbon market and a taxonomy for sustainable financing.
"Today's CABEI is a stronger, more efficient and transparent institution, focused on maximizing its positive impact on the region. This is just the beginning; in 2025, we are going for more," said CABEI Executive President Gisela Sánchez.
In line with its vision of transparency, CABEI launched a new Anti-Fraud and Anti-Corruption Policy, entered into an alliance with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and developed a new Access to Information Policy with real-time compliance indicators.
The Bank has also advanced technologically, from the creation of a data management and governance policy to the robotization of processes and the development of a Digital Services Portal, which has enabled firm steps towards modernization and operational efficiency.
"All these achievements have been possible thanks to the commitment and hard work of an extraordinary team of collaborators and the trust and support of our Directors and Governors" noted President Sanchez.
