MUSC Health to provide medical services for Diamond Youth Sports World Series (July 10, 2024)

Orangeburg, S.C. (July 10, 2024) - MUSC Health has been named the official health care provider for the 2024 Diamond Youth Sports World Series, divisions 1 and 2 AA, Coach Pitch, which will be held in Orangeburg from July 25 to 30. This partnership highlights MUSC Health's commitment to community wellness and youth athletics.

Walter Bennett III, CEO of MUSC Health-Orangeburg, emphasized the significance of this partnership. "Serving as the official health care provider for the Diamond Youth Sports World Series echoes our dedication to supporting youth sports," Bennett said. "This event allows our team to demonstrate their exceptional capabilities and reinforces our role as a vital community health resource. We look forward to ensuring a safe and successful tournament for all participants."

Throughout the event, MUSC Health-Orangeburg care team members will collaborate with Orangeburg County Emergency Medical Services (OCEMS) and Orangeburg County Office of Emergency Services, offering comprehensive health care options for both players and attendees.

Services will include an onsite team of registered nurses from MUSC Health-Orangeburg's Emergency Department to provide acute medical care, emergency medical technicians and paramedics from OCEMS to support the nursing staff and offer medical care to attendees, Lifeguard Ambulance's paramedic-level units onsite for medical transportation and the MEDUCARE 4 transport helicopter on standby in the event of a critical emergency. The Orangeburg County Office of Emergency Services will oversee logistics, ensuring efficient medical operations.

In addition to these services, a team of athletic trainers will be stationed within the complex to manage the treatment of sports-related injuries. The team aims to prevent heat-related concerns and assess players at risk for developing these illnesses. The sports medicine team will work closely with MUSC specialists to provide emergency and follow-up care.

Kathy Booker, external affairs and strategic engagement manager at MUSC Health-Orangeburg focuses on the community engagement aspect of the partnership.
