Hazardous Waste Town Hall set for September 4

A "Hazardous Waste Town Hall" has been scheduled for 6 p.m. September 4 at the Wayne County Community College District's Ted Scott Campus, 9555 Haggerty Road, Belleville.

It will be held in Room B121.

The meeting has been called to discuss a plan by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ship radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project to a landfill in Van Buren Township. The waste includes contaminated soil, concrete and groundwater from the Niagara Falls Storage Site, a uranium ore waste facility. The low radiation level waste is part of a remediation project for the Niagara Falls site, and is being shipped to Wayne Disposal.

The waste is scheduled to be shipped to truck to Wayne Disposal. Twenty-five trucks a week will transport the waste through January 2025.

The Manhattan Project built the atomic weapons that helped end World War II.

The Army Corps of Engineers states that the shipping complies with all local, state and federal regulations. However, some residents in the arear are concerned about the safety of the transport and notification process.

According to a release from U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, she will be in attendance along with Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Republic Services, Inc., EGLE, USACE, DOT, EPA and other state and local officials.
