Santa Ana City Council unanimously approves historic $2.9 billion Related Bristol mixed-use urban village
The project includes 3,750 residential units, 200 senior living units, a 250-room hotel, 350,000 square feet of commercial space, and 13.1 acres of open space.
SANTA ANA, Calif. - The Santa Ana City Council has approved the largest and most expensive mixed-use, master planned development in the city's history, the 41-acre, $2.9 billion Related Bristol urban village that will transform Santa Ana's southern gateway.
The project is expected to create 16,834 one-time jobs and $1.5 billion in one-time labor income citywide, as well as 1,215 to 5,529 new jobs and over $337 million in new labor income on an ongoing basis.
"This is a historic project for Santa Ana that will create thousands of new jobs and housing units while generating billions of dollars for the local economy," Mayor Valerie Amezcua said. "The City Council's unanimous approval of Related Bristol reflects our vision and commitment to plan for the needs of our current and future residents through responsible growth and thoughtful new development that will benefit the entire community."
The City Council's approval of the project on Tuesday, Oct. 15, followed thorough review and negotiation with City of Santa Ana Planning and Building Agency staff, the formation of a City Council ad hoc committee in October 2023, and review by the Santa Ana Planning Commission. The project by Related California is located near South Coast Plaza along a major business corridor in an area bordered by South Bristol Street, South Plaza Drive, West MacArthur Boulevard and Sunflower Avenue.
The Related Bristol Specific Plan includes up to 3,750 residential units, 200 senior living units, a 250-room hotel, and 350,000 square feet of commercial space. It will also feature approximately 13.1 acres of publicly accessible open space, including parks, plazas, walkways, and other green spaces.
The project will provide a Police Department substation and 24/7 onsite security to patrol the 41-acre area. Under the development agreement with the City, Related California will pay the City $22 million for community benefits, an estimated $18 million of in-lieu housing fees for the creation of new affordable housing, and ensure the 13.1 acres of open space remain permanently accessible to the public.
Work on Related Bristol is expected to begin in 2026 and to be completed in phases, with the entire development finished in 2036.
