Fire Department utilizing portable speed bumps
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - In an ongoing effort to improve safety at accident sites, the Fayetteville Fire Department is implementing the use of portable speed bumps.
These innovative tools, strategically placed in and around emergency scenes, are designed to protect responders, patients and motorists by slowing traffic and reducing the risk of secondary accidents.
"The deployment of portable speed bumps is a proactive measure to address the increasing traffic flow and enhance safety for firefighters, EMS personnel and police officers who work in high-risk roadside environments," said Assistant Chief Rusty Hulse.
"By significantly lowering vehicle speeds, these speed bumps create a safer buffer zone, allowing responders to focus on patient care and scene management without the added danger of fast-moving traffic nearby."
Arkansas has a "move over" law, which requires motorists to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles. This new initiative with portable speed bumps reinforces that law by physically reminding drivers to exercise caution.
"We ask for the community's support and cooperation as we implement these speed bumps at various incident sites across Fayetteville," Hulse said. "Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone."
