EU and Taiwan hold third Trade and Investment Dialogue

The strong links between the EU and Taiwan are demonstrated by solid trade and investment flows. Taiwan ranks as the EU's thirteenth largest trading partner, while the EU is Taiwan's third largest destination of exports and fifth largest source of imports. The EU is also Taiwan's largest source of Foreign Direct Investments.

During today's dialogue, the two parties exchanged views on developments and potential challenges related to trade, economic security and supply chains, as well as discussing their respective approaches to these matters.

Both sides expressed their appreciation for the recently achieved understanding on offshore wind investment conditions. The EU emphasised the importance of effectively implementing this agreement. The EU also raised its long-standing market access concerns on agri-food exports.

Looking forward to the future development of EU-Taiwan trade and investment relations, both sides agreed to continue exchanges in the context of the Dialogue and reflected on new areas of possible cooperation.

Background

Taiwan is an important trading partner for the EU. It has a vibrant high-tech sector and a world-leading advanced semiconductor industry, vital to both the green and digital transitions. Taiwan was the EU's thirteenth largest trading partner in 2023, totaling €78.3 billion in bilateral trade in goods. The EU maintained its role as Taiwan's largest foreign investor in 2023 with investments of €2.9 billion, of which the majority was concentrated in the offshore wind sector.
