Digital relaunch with adesso: Borussia Dortmund's new website celebrates its season debut

Borussia Dortmund (BVB) is one of the most well-known and popular football clubs at an international level. Surveys in 2023 showed that alone in Germany, around 14 million people said they were very interested in BVB. Interest in BVB is growing from year to year, and this is reflected in the number of members, which now stands at over 200,000. The club is committed to meeting the high demand for information by its fans and members, as well as its sponsors and partners, while also offering services that meet the highest technical standards. That is why together with adesso, its long-standing partner in the field of digitalisation, the Bundesliga club has completely overhauled its website, BVB.de , which was relaunched in June 2024.

The website is the central hub of the digital Borussia world. BVB.de provides fans and other interested parties with all the access and information they need about "their" club: from tickets and news, to the fan shop. Together with adesso, BVB relaunched its website in recent months so that it can continue to meet the growing needs of its visitors in future.

A revamped look and optimised performance for a top-notch user experience

Borussia Dortmund set clear objectives for its website redesign: one of the aims of the new Club Hub is to provide all fans with easy access to information in a centralised location, with no digital barriers, and on all devices. Partners and sponsors can now showcase their association with BVB in a much more effective and eye-catching way. In addition, it goes without saying that the new website needs to be fast and reliable, especially during peak times such as match days.

As part of the relaunch project, adesso not only developed a new user interface: the IT service provider's team also integrated seven previously independent domains into a single domain. This enabled adesso to standardise and improve the user interface from the ground up, thus making it easier for users to interact with the website intuitively. During the redesign, everyone involved in the project incorporated and translated BVB's new corporate design into a digital format. To achieve this, the team created a modern, fresh look for the website that reflects the club's current design language and which is optimised for both desktop and mobile devices. Categories have also been added to the news section, organised according to different sports or topics. Now that the site is more clearly laid out and easier to use, visitors can access information such as fixture lists, player profiles and club news even faster and more efficiently. The performance of the website has been improved: users benefit from 50 per cent faster loading times on average as well as seamless use on a wide range of devices and across a variety of different networks. This means that pages and content are displayed more quickly, which has the potential to increase user engagement. Although the time frame for comparison is short, it is already clear that user experience is trending upwards: the number of pages viewed per session grew by around 50 per cent compared to the same period last year. The time spent on the website has even increased more than threefold.

Particular attention was paid to accessibility when developing the website. By incorporating accessible design principles and technologies, Borussia Dortmund ensures that the online platform can be used by all fans, regardless of their individual abilities. In independent tests, the new website has already met 75 per cent of all applicable criteria, including those required by the German Accessibility Act (Barrierefreiheitsgesetz, BFSG). Together with adesso, BVB is working towards completing the catalogue of requirements by June 2025.

Everything under one roof

All of the club's sports divisions are now featured on the BVB.de website in a uniform look and feel. This upgrade gives fans the opportunity to immerse themselves even more deeply in the world of Borussia Dortmund. From football to men's table tennis and women's handball - they can all be found under one roof at BVB.de . Thanks to this integration, fans can now keep track of and support all areas of the club.

"The BVB website is the first point of contact for our fans and members for everything related to the club. adesso has created a state-of-the-art, high-performance website that can cope with the ever-increasing number of users and helps us to reach even more people," says Alexander Mühl, Director of Marketing and Digitalisation at Borussia Dortmund. Mühl adds: "The summer break showed that the performance figures are spot on. The new website coped admirably with its first stress tests, including the tour of Asia in Japan and Thailand, the training camp in Bad Ragaz, and the BVB season opener against Aston Villa."

Introduction of Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) for digital touchpoints

A key component of the relaunch was the introduction of Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) as the basis for all digital touchpoints on the website. AEM delivers a comprehensive content management and digital experience management platform that enables the Bundesliga club to deliver personalised content and maximise fan engagement online.

adesso experts in the fields of front-end development, UX conception, and user interface design worked with the Munich-based Adobe partner eggs unimedia GmbH to implement the relaunch strategy.

"With the relaunch of BVB.de, we have sent a clear signal together with Borussia Dortmund: The club is now not only at Champions League level on the pitch, but also online," says Julia Schaper, Project Manager at adesso, adding: "The new website not only has a better look, but also delivers a much more intuitive and faster experience that will appeal to users on all devices. This strengthens the club's ties with its fans across all channels and brings them even closer to the action on and off the pitch."
