Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at UP welcomes 2024 cohort

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of Pretoria (UP) recently hosted an orientation event to welcome the 2024 cohort. The programme seeks to provide equitable access to education and foster leadership among young scholars across Africa.

The orientation served as an introduction for the new Mastercard Foundation scholars, providing them with essential information about UP's facilities, academic expectations and support services. It aimed to instil a sense of belonging and purpose in them, and prepare them for the academic rigours and community engagement opportunities ahead.

The first phase of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme involved a 10-year partnership between the foundation and the University, making UP the first university in South Africa to join the programme. This phase aimed to provide comprehensive support to 347 undergraduate and postgraduates between 2013 and 2023. By its conclusion in 2023, the programme had exceeded expectations by supporting 397 scholars from diverse African backgrounds.

Programme manager Dr Grace Ramafi emphasised the programme's core mission.

"The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme aims to ensure that all young people, regardless of their circumstances, have the opportunity to receive a quality education and pursue their aspirations."

As it enters its second phase, from 2024 to 2030, the programme at UP has welcomed 45 new scholars from eight African countries - Eritrea, Ethiopia, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Eswatini, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Overall, the programme hosts students from 27 African countries.

"The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at UP continues to keep the African dream alive, nurturing transformational leaders who will contribute meaningfully to our continent's economic and social development," Dr Ramafi said to the scholars at the induction event. "You have been selected because of your intellect and potential capacity to lead."

During the event, Professor Loretta Feris, Vice-Principal: Academic, spoke about UP's commitment to equitable access to education.

"As I reflect on the transformative power of education, I see how scholarships like those from the Mastercard Foundation open doors for young scholars across Africa," she said. "These programmes not only nurture academic excellence but also cultivate leaders who will shape our continent's future. Today, you join this remarkable cohort, poised to make a difference. Embrace this opportunity, excel in your studies and remember, your journey here is not just about earning a degree - it's about becoming catalysts for positive change in Africa and beyond."

"Receiving this scholarship means more than just financial relief," said Beti Mekonen from Eritrea, who is pursuing a master's in International Airspace and Telecommunications Law. "It means building my future without the worry of financial constraints that burdened me during my undergraduate years. This opportunity is a testament to the Mastercard Foundation's commitment to transforming lives and empowering future leaders like myself."

"Prior to receiving the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, I navigated different roles in international relations, searching for my path," said Kamvelihle Mapundu from South Africa, who is pursuing a master's in Diplomatic Studies at UP. "The programme has been a transformative opportunity, affirming my passion for African development and empowering me to contribute meaningfully. With this scholarship, I feel empowered to collaborate with like-minded individuals towards realising Africa's potential."

Tito Magoti from Tanzania is pursuing a Master of Laws in Human Rights and Democratisation. For him, the scholarship confirms his personal resolve and ability to return to his community.

"It aligns with the foundation's ethos of supporting solution-based initiatives and holds profound significance for both my personal journey and the societal impact I aim to achieve."

As the scholars embark on this transformative experience, UP and the Mastercard Foundation remain steadfast in their mission to empower African youth and build a brighter future for the continent.
