San Antonio Public Library invites residents to Get Eclipse Ready!

Published on September 01, 2023

Library locations to host programs gearing up for the October and April solar eclipses.

SAN ANTONIO (September 1, 2023) - San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) will help San Antonio residents prepare for the upcoming solar eclipses through a series of educational programs.

Throughout September and October, library branches across the city will host "Get Eclipse Ready" programs to help participants learn about the upcoming fall and spring eclipses. Programs will feature information on how to safely view a solar eclipse, hands-on activities, the science behind eclipses, and opportunities to talk to subject-matter experts ahead of these rare astronomical events.

Participants at SAPL's "Get Eclipse Ready" programs will receive eclipse viewing glasses on a first-come, first-served basis. Eclipse glasses are special-purpose glasses designed, when used properly, to allow users to look directly at the everyday sun for a short period of time. "Get Eclipse Ready" programs are intended for all ages.

During the Saturday, October 14 annular eclipse, all of San Antonio will be plunged into twilight darkness at midday during this rare opportunity. Then on Monday, April 8, 2024 much of San Antonio will experience a total solar eclipse, with areas outside the path of totality still experiencing a spectacular partial eclipse.

Library locations will not host watch parties for the eclipses, but SAPL has partnered with Alamo STEM Ecosystem to offer viewing events. Details about these viewing events are forthcoming.

Visit the Library's Eclipse web page or call the Library at 210-207-2500 to learn more and find a program near you. The Get Eclipse Ready program series is made possible through funding from NASA @ My Library and Space Science Institute. The availability of solar eclipse viewing glasses is made possible through funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Space Science Institute.
